Despite its power and intimidating appearance, Dogues de Bordeaux make good family dogs and are gentle with children. Male Dogues de Bordeaux are intolerant of other male dogs. Dogues de Bordeaux must be carefully socialized at an early age. Dogues de Bordeaux are best for experienced owners. Dogues de Bordeaux need plenty of exercise but are fairly inactive when inside and can live in an apartment.

During the time of Julius Caesar, a breed similar to the Dogue de Bordeaux existed in the Roman Empire. The Dogue de Bordeaux is an older breed than the Bulldog or the Mastiff.
